About

The working day has never had a drink of its own.

0800Labs exists around the working day: the long run of hours between the first coffee and the last email, most of it spent in front of a screen. We're not an electrolyte brand, a sports supplement brand, or an energy drink, and we don't speak the language of general self-improvement.

We are interested in one narrower thing: the space between coffee and water, and what people actually reach for, and need, across a long, screen-heavy working day.

What we're studying

How the working day actually moves.

We study how the working day actually moves: when energy and attention change shape, what a screen-heavy afternoon does to a person by 2pm, why another coffee starts to feel automatic rather than chosen, and what, if anything, should sit between coffee and water for that specific stretch of the day.

Some of this is behavioural. Some of it is formulation. All of it starts with research before it becomes a product.

Field observation
  • 08:07First light at a desk.
  • 11:18A glass beside the keyboard.
  • 14:14An empty coffee cup.
  • 15:52An unfinished document.
  • 18:03A laptop closing.

What we're watching for, before we're watching it through a lens.

What we believe

A short list we hold to.

Own a moment, not an ingredient.

Coffee isn't the villain. The absence of anything built for this specific stretch of the day is.

Ingredients can be copied in ninety days. A moment can't.

We'd rather publish a result we don't like than quietly shelve it.

Restraint is a decision, not a lack of something to say.

How we work

Research first, then formulation, then telling you what happened.

We research before we formulate, and we test before we claim anything. When an early version doesn't meet the standard we're building to, we say so instead of quietly moving on. That's what happened with our first field test, and we published the result rather than treat it as something to hide. We expect that to happen again.

Publishing what we find, including when it isn't flattering, is the only way we know to earn trust before there's a finished product to sell.

Expertise

Different disciplines, answering the same question.

0800Labs brings together work across formulation, nutritional biochemistry, food science, product development, research, and workday behaviour. Each discipline answers a different part of the same question: what belongs in the space between coffee and water, and why.

  • Formulation

    What goes in, and why

What goes into a workday drink, and why each part earns its place.

  • Nutritional biochemistry

    How the body uses it

How the body actually uses what it's given, not just what a label claims.

  • Food science

    Taste and how it dissolves

Taste, stability, and how it dissolves, treated as seriously as the formula itself.

  • Product development

    From idea to object

Turning a considered idea into something that survives a real desk and a real day.

  • Research

    Testing before claiming

Testing what we think we know before we say it publicly.

  • Workday behaviour

    How people actually work

How people actually move through a working day, not how a brief assumes they do.

Formulation and evidence review: Daniel Maynard, Formulation & Scientific Advisor.

We name a contributor once they've agreed to be named in public. The disciplines above are staffed the same way whether or not a name sits next to them. What we publish is the work, not a roster.

Where things stand

Still being built, and we'll say so as long as that's true.

We haven't finalised a formula. We haven't set a price. We're not making claims about what the product does until we know it's true and can say so plainly.

The honest answer to "is it available yet" is no. The Labs is how we will tell you when that changes, and nothing else.

The Labs

What joining actually gets you.

There's no finished product yet, so there's nothing to sell today.

Labs members see the parts of our research that don't make it into a public Field Note: the unfinished tests, the choices we're still weighing.

When there's a first production run, Labs members get it before it's public. Not a discount. Earlier.
