It's the afternoon, and another coffee is the automatic reach, the moment we wrote about in The Third Coffee. This piece is about what else already exists for that same moment, and, just as importantly, what this piece isn't going to do with that list.

What's Already There

A real landscape already exists for the moment someone reaches for something other than another coffee at work. There are hydration and electrolyte drinks, built around minerals and fluid rather than caffeine. There are functional drinks built around adaptogens or mushrooms, often positioned toward calm or focus. There's tea, in more varieties than coffee has. There's water, plainly. And there's a walk, or five minutes away from the desk, which isn't a drink at all but is very often what actually happens.

None of these categories is named here as a product to choose. This is a map of what exists, not a shortlist.

Why This Isn't a Ranking

We're not going to tell you which of those is "best," because we don't think there's a single answer, and because we don't have a product in that landscape yet to be recommending instead of any of them. A guide that quietly ranked its way toward its own product wouldn't be honest, and we don't have that product to reach for even if we wanted to.

What Actually Decides It

In practice, what someone reaches for in that moment tends to depend less on any drink's properties and more on what's actually true of the moment itself: what's nearby, what's already a habit, whether coffee still sounds right that particular afternoon. That's closer to how we think about this territory generally: the occasion matters more than the ingredient inside it.

Questions

What can I drink at work instead of another coffee?

There's a real landscape of options, not one right answer: hydration and electrolyte drinks, functional drinks built around adaptogens, tea, plain water, or simply five minutes away from the desk. This piece deliberately doesn't rank these, because what actually decides the choice in the moment tends to be what's nearby and already a habit, not any drink's specific properties.

Why 0800Labs Is Interested in This Moment

This is the same moment The Third Coffee and The 3pm Slump have both written about from different angles: the point in the day where coffee starts to feel automatic rather than chosen. We're not claiming any drink category above solves that. We're interested in the moment itself, which is what we call Workday Hydration (our own term for the occasion, not a claim about what any of the drinks named above, or any future drink of ours, actually does).

There's no product to buy yet. The Labs is how we'll tell you when there is.
